アフリカのケヤキと呼ばれる木

空気に触れると深みのある赤褐色になるのが特徴でケヤキに少し似た雰囲気を持つため、日本ではアフリカケヤキとして神社仏閣用材に使用される。耐久性が高く、シロアリ害にきわめて強いため、悪条件下での橋、桟橋等の海中構造物用の重構造材や耐久構造材として第一級とされている。ドウシエ（Doussie）、アフゼリア（Afzelia)等とも呼ばれる。

A tree called zelkova of Africa

When exposed to air, it develops a rich reddish-brown color. Because it has a look somewhat reminiscent of Japanese zelkova, it is known in Japan as “African zelkova” and used for construction materials in shrines and temples. Highly durable and extremely resistant to termite damage, it is considered a top-grade heavy structural and durable construction timber for bridges, piers, and other marine structures in harsh conditions. It is also known as doussie and afzelia.
