A relative of the cedar of Lebanon

It grows across a region stretching from the Himalayas to Afghanistan. Although it is called a cedar, it is taxonomically closer to pines. It is widely planted along streets and in gardens. Its durable, rot-resistant wood has a fine grain that takes on a beautiful sheen when polished, so it is also commonly used as a building material for temples and other structures.
The cedar of Lebanon, which appears on Lebanon’s flag, is a closely related species.
