耐久性にも優れており腐りにくく、香りの良さを活かして床柱などの内装材や家具の材料として昔から重宝された良質な木材。加工性の良さから鉛筆軸などにも利用される。葉の付いた枝はどんどん上に伸び、木全体で炎のような形に見える。滋賀県の伊吹山の木が名前の由来という説もある。
