非常に硬く丈夫で、色合いも美しいことから、昔から高級材として知られる。よく言われる花・果実とも楽しめ、新緑・紅葉が非常に美しいため家庭果樹として植えられる花梨（カリン）とは別の種。ちなみに花梨は、語呂合わせで「金は貸すが借りない」の縁起を担ぎ、庭の表に植え、裏にカシノキを植えると商売繁盛に良いといわれる。
