高級銘木の代名詞、漆黒の木

コクタンには漆黒の材質、真黒（まぐろ）と、縞のある縞コクタンに大別される。インドやスリランカからでる真黒材は美しく、床柱の最高級品。ピアノの黒鍵は真黒が好まれ、白鍵が象牙のコンビが最高のものとされる。他にはヴァイオリンなど弦楽器の指板、カスタネット（打楽器）やチェスの駒などに使われる。

Ebony is broadly divided into jet-black varieties, known as makuro, and striped varieties, known as striped ebony. The makuro ebony from India and Sri Lanka is beautiful and is considered the finest material for decorative alcove posts. Makuro is preferred for the black keys of pianos, and the finest keyboards pair them with ivory white keys. Ebony is also used for the fingerboards of string instruments such as violins, as well as for castanets and chess pieces.
