高級銘木の代名詞、漆黒の木

コクタンには漆黒の材質、真黒（まぐろ）と、縞のある縞コクタンに大別される。インドやスリランカからでる真黒材は美しく、床柱の最高級品。ピアノの黒鍵は真黒が好まれ、白鍵が象牙のコンビが最高のものとされる。他にはヴァイオリンなど弦楽器の指板、カスタネット（打楽器）やチェスの駒などに使われる。

Coctan is roughly divided into black material, black and white (tuna) and streaky striped cook. The black material from India and Sri Lanka is beautiful, the highest grade item on the column. The black key of the piano is preferred for black and the white key is taken to be the best combination of ivory. Besides, it is used for fingerboard of stringed instruments such as violin, castanet (percussion instrument) and chess piece.
