the wood of a whiskey barrel

It is characterized by a wood grain known as tiger stripe, which appears in quarter-sawn wood. Because the timber is dense and hard, it is used for furniture, construction, and railroad ties. It contains compounds that give it a distinctive aroma and flavor, so it is also used for smoking chips and for aging barrels for whisky and brandy. Reclaimed wood from used barrels is known as “whisky oak” and is also used to make high-end furniture.
