The wood that served as the base for the Mona Lisa

The wood is light and soft. Some trees grow to enormous sizes, reaching up to 40 meters in height and 1 meter in diameter, and may develop burl grain. The name “poplar” is also a collective term for several related species, including the North American quaking aspen and cottonwood. Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, the Mona Lisa, was painted directly on poplar wood.
