日本伝統工芸の漆の木

塗料として美術工芸品に使われる漆で知られている木。漆の語源は、「麗し（うるわし）」「潤し（うるおし）」とも言われる。古来より、触るとかぶれるという漆特有の力から、邪魔なものを寄せ付けない力がある魔除けとして重宝されてきた。果物のマンゴーもウルシ科のひとつで、漆の新芽は食べることができ、みそ汁や天ぷらにすると美味しいと言われる。

Japanese traditional craft lacquer tree

A tree known for its lacquer, which is used as a coating for arts and crafts. The word for lacquer is also said to come from uruwashi (“beautiful”) or uruoshi (“moistening”). Since ancient times, lacquer has been prized as a protective charm believed to ward off unwanted things, thanks to its distinctive property of causing a rash when touched. Mangoes also belong to the sumac family, and young lacquer tree shoots are edible and said to be delicious in miso soup or tempura.
