Guts of guts
The pine tree commonly seen in everyday life is often the Japanese red pine. Because it can grow even in the most barren soil, it is known as the “tough-as-nails tree.”
It is used for construction lumber, bonsai, and landscaping. It is resistant to moisture and water, and is sometimes used as a piling in waterlogged soil. One story tells of a buried pile used in a building constructed after the Meiji era that was pulled out and found to be completely unrotted. It is also said that as long as it hasn’t dried out, it won’t rot even underwater.
