「明日には檜になりたい」の木
ヒノキやサワラと並んで木曾五木の一つに数えられる。ヒノキ似た材質かつ水に強いのが特長で、まな板や浴槽、風呂桶などに使用される。
また、名前に反しヒノキには少ない抗菌成分であるヒノキチオールが、ヒバには多く含まれている。別名であるアスナロは「枕草子」の「何の心ありてあすはひのきとつけけむ」（どういう思いで「あすはヒノキ」と名前をつけたのだろう）にも出てくる歴史ある名称である。

Along with hinoki cypress and sawara cypress, it is counted as one of the five sacred trees of Kiso. Its wood resembles hinoki and is water-resistant, making it suitable for cutting boards, bathtubs, and bath buckets.
Despite its name, hiba contains large amounts of hinokitiol, an antibacterial compound found in only small quantities in hinoki. Its other name, ”Asunaro”, is a historic one that also appears in The Pillow Book: “What could have inspired someone to name it ‘tomorrow’s hinoki’?”
