An elegant, fragrant wood
The wood is water-resistant and pleasant to the touch, so it is used for the handles of Japanese knives and the scabbards of Japanese swords. It has the largest leaves of any tree in Japan, and they have long been used as plates; traces of magnolia leaves laid inside a sixth-century burial mound have also been found. Because the leaves are fragrant and have antibacterial properties, they are used to wrap ingredients for hōba sushi and in hōba miso, a local dish made by grilling miso and other ingredients on a leaf.
