イチイは叙位制度での最高位「正一位」を意味する。または、古代日本で朝廷から第一位に重要な君命を拝受する際に眼前に掲げる笏に使われたことが由来ともされる。岐阜県大野郡が有名産地で、岐阜県の県木でもある。飛騨高山の伝統工芸、一位一刀彫が有名。

The Japanese yew is said to signify “Shōichii,” the highest rank in the court rank system. Another proposed origin is that its wood was used to make the shaku ceremonial baton held before the eyes when receiving an especially important imperial command of the highest rank in ancient Japan. Ōno District in Gifu Prefecture is a well-known production area, and the Japanese yew is also Gifu Prefecture’s prefectural tree. Hida Takayama’s traditional craft of ichi-i ittōbori (carving a single block of Japanese yew with a single knife) is famous.
