イチイは「一位」という最高位の意味。古代日本で神官が君命(くんめい:主君の命令)を拝受する際に笏(しゃく)を眼前に掲げ君命を書き記す際に使用された。君命は第一位に重要なので笏にはイチイの木だけが使われた事が名前の由来。岐阜県大野郡が有名産地で、岐阜県の県木。飛騨高山の伝統工芸、一位一刀彫が有名。
