An exceedingly rare, top-grade material—a mysterious wood

Even after several centuries, this is still a small-diameter tree, with a trunk less than one meter across, yet it is exceptionally rare and valuable—one of the finest grades of timber. When a persimmon tree grows old, reaching several hundred years of age, its compounds can react with substances in the soil, occasionally producing black patterns that look as if they were painted with ink. This wood is called kuro-gaki, or black persimmon, and is prized as a top-grade material for traditional Japanese interiors and for go bowls used to store Go stones.
