Tree representing legend "High ideal in the moon"

The leaves are heart-shaped, and the tree is said to have a sweet fragrance similar to the smell of soy sauce when its leaves fall. In Chinese legend, the katsura tree symbolizes “high ideals said to exist within the moon,” and it also appears in Japan’s Man’yōshū poetry anthology. It can grow into enormous trees designated as natural monuments at the national or prefectural level, and some are 2,000 years old. In Hida, within Tenyu Prefectural Natural Park, stands a cluster of giant trees known as “Katsura Gate.” Because its wood is fragrant and durable, it is used for carvings, building columns and beams, tables and chairs, and shogi and go boards.
