寺社仏閣に使われる神聖な木

耐湿性や耐候性に優れているため、日本では古来より建築材、家具材、構造材など幅広く使われてきた、寺社や高級住宅の大黒柱としても使用されてきた。国会議事堂の内装にも、繊細な彫刻が施されたケヤキが使われている。また、ちゃぶ台や茶箪笥、仏壇などの最高級品を代表する素材でもある。ケヤキ製の汁椀は、冷めにくく手で持っても熱くなく、かつ落としても欠けない日常道具の名品と言われる。大樹に育つ性質を持ち、中には樹齢1500年を誇り、国の特別天然記念物に指定された木もある。

Sacred tree used for shrines and temples

Due to its excellent moisture and weather resistance, zelkova has been widely used in Japan since ancient times for construction, furniture, and structural materials, and has even served as the central pillar for temples, shrines, and high-end residences. The interior of the National Diet Building also features delicately carved zelkova wood. Furthermore, it is a representative material for top-quality items such as low dining tables, tea chests, and Buddhist altars. Zelkova soup bowls are considered masterpieces of everyday tools, as they retain heat well, remain cool to the touch, and do not chip if dropped. The tree has the potential to grow quite large; some specimens are over 1,500 years old and have been designated as Special National Natural Monuments.
