野球のバットの木

年輪は明瞭で美しい杢目を有するため、家具や小物に人気のある樹種。やや重硬で、弾力性を有するため野球のバットやラケットに使われ、かつてはスキー板などにも使用された。富山でバット産業が盛んになったのは、タモがとれるためといわれる。樹皮は漢方薬とされ、止瀉薬や結膜炎時の洗浄剤として用いられる。

Baseball bat wood

This species is popular for furniture and small decorative items because its growth rings are distinct and its grain is beautiful. It is somewhat heavy and hard, yet elastic, so it is used for baseball bats and racquets; in the past, it was also used for skis. Toyama’s bat-making industry is said to have flourished because ash trees grow there. The bark is used in traditional Chinese medicine as an antidiarrheal and as a wash for conjunctivitis.
