A sacred wood used in designs with a distinguished history
It is regarded as a sacred tree where the phoenix alights, and is used in traditional family crest designs and the emblem of the Prime Minister. The reverse side of the 500-yen coin is also decorated with paulownia leaves. Because paulownia is the lightest of Japanese woods, resists moisture, rarely splits or warps, and grows quickly, people once planted a paulownia tree when a daughter was born, then made a paulownia chest for her wedding trousseau when she married.
