A brand of hinoki cypress harvested in the Kiso region. Hinoki is celebrated in the saying, “For trees, hinoki; for flowers, cherry blossoms; for people, samurai.” One of the Five Trees of Kiso, it is also recognized worldwide as an outstanding conifer. It has a distinctive fragrance and beautiful sheen, and is elastic, stable, durable, and water-resistant. For these qualities, it is used as a premium building material in temple and shrine architecture—including the central pillar of Hōryūji Temple’s five-story pagoda—as well as for interior finishing, furniture, doors and windows, and bentwood products.
