北米のウォールナットと同属だが、日本のクルミ材の方が材質が柔らかで優しい色合い。日本でクルミ材と言えばオニグルミ材が主である。実の栄養価が高いため、食用としての利用は古く、紀元前7000年前から人類が食していたともいわれる。

Japanese walnut tree

Though it belongs to the same genus as North American walnut, Japanese walnut wood is softer and has a gentler color. In Japan, “walnut” wood mainly refers to Japanese walnut. Because the nuts are highly nutritious, they have been eaten since ancient times; it is said that humans have consumed them since as early as 7000 BCE.
