ヒノキの兄弟のような木

ヒノキに似た日本特産種で、ヒノキと比べてさわらか（さっぱりしてシンプルであることを意味する古語）であることが由来。木曽地方・飛騨地方に多く、江戸時代には木曽五木の１つに指定され保護されていた。吸湿・放湿性がよく水分による変形が少ないため、戸障子の枠にも使用されている。匂いが少ないことから、飯びつ、箸、風呂桶、漆器の下地材などに使用。殺菌作用があるため、松茸など食品の下の敷物としても使われる。

A species native to Japan, similar to hinoki cypress. Its name comes from the fact that, compared with hinoki, it is sawara—an old word meaning fresh and simple. It is abundant in the Kiso and Hida regions and was designated as one of the Five Trees of Kiso and protected during the Edo period. Because it absorbs and releases moisture well and is little prone to warping from moisture, it is also used for the frames of sliding doors and shoji screens. Its mild scent makes it suitable for rice tubs, chopsticks, bath tubs, and as a base material for lacquerware. It also has antibacterial properties, so it is used as a lining beneath foods such as matsutake mushrooms.
