日本建築に欠かせない木

木目は鮮明でまっすぐとしていて、日本では古来から重要な木材として日本建築に多用されてきた身近な木。特有の芳香を有し、杉樽に貯蔵することによって日本酒に香りをつけたりすることもある。本居宣長は、スギは傍らにはびこらず上へ進み上る木として「進木(ススギ)」を名前の由来としている。樽、桶、工芸品、割り箸、曲物などの小物にも使われる。

Wood, essential to Japanese architecture

Its grain is distinct and straight, and since ancient times this familiar wood has been widely used in Japanese architecture as an important timber. It has a distinctive fragrance, and storing sake in cedar barrels can impart that aroma to the drink. Motoori Norinaga suggested that the name sugi comes from “susugi” (進木), meaning a tree that does not spread sideways but grows upward. It is also used for small items such as barrels, buckets, crafts, disposable chopsticks, and bentwood containers.
