シマウマのような木目からゼブラウッドと呼ばれる。日本でも婚礼家具全盛期はゼブラウッドの単板が洋服ダンスなどの家具に大流行した。木質は重硬で、磨くと光沢が出る。原産国の多くで伐採禁止となってからは流通量が激減し、今やかなりの希少価値。

Zebrawood, which is currently difficult to harvest

It is called zebrawood because its grain resembles a zebra’s stripes. During the heyday of bridal furniture in Japan, zebrawood veneer was extremely popular for furniture such as wardrobes purchased for newlyweds. The wood is dense and hard, and takes on a glossy finish when polished. Since logging has been banned in many of its countries of origin, supplies have fallen sharply, and it is now quite rare and valuable.
