地中から蘇った日本の銘木
神代木とは、樹木が地震や洪水、噴火などによって埋もれた際、酸素が遮断され分解・腐敗することなく数百年から数千年を経た、半ば炭化した埋れ木である。非常に希少価値の高い銘木であり、炭化がさらに数万年進んだものは石炭となる。木目は美しいまま保たれているが、ケヤキ特有の匂いはあまりしない。最高級材として家具、建具、細工物などに使われる。
Japanese precious trees revived from the ground
Jindai wood is partially carbonized buried wood formed when trees are buried by earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, or other events. Cut off from oxygen, they avoid decomposition and decay for hundreds or thousands of years. It is an exceptionally rare and valuable timber; wood that undergoes further carbonization over tens of thousands of years becomes coal. Its beautiful grain remains intact, though it has little of the distinctive scent of zelkova. It is used as a top-grade material for furniture, fittings, and decorative objects.
