神代とは、地震や洪水、噴火などによって埋もれ、酸素が遮断され菌や虫などによって腐敗することなく数百年から数千年を経た、半ば炭化した埋れ木であり、非常に希少価値の高い銘木。炭化がさらに数万年進んだ物は石炭となる。スギは白から青みがかった黒へと変化をとげ、美しい木目をみせる。工芸品や天井板などの材料として珍重される。
