A popular tree for planting along streets

The Japanese name for the London plane tree is momijiba-suzukake-no-ki, said to have been named for its spherical, bell-like fruits. Its large, maple-like leaves provide shade, and because it grows quickly and tolerates exhaust fumes, it is often planted along streets. For this reason, it is also considered one of the world’s four major avenue tree species. Its wood is used mainly for furniture.
