the tree in the saying “Chinaberry is fragrant even as a sprout”
It is famous for appearing in the proverb “The chinaberry tree is fragrant even as a two-leaf sprout,” which means that a person destined for greatness shows exceptional promise from an early age. However, the tree referred to here is not the actual Japanese chinaberry but the sandalwood tree. Its leaves have a strong insect-repellent effect, while its bark and fruit are used in herbal medicine to treat chilblains externally and to aid digestion. Some studies also suggest that its extracted compounds can inactivate influenza viruses. It grows into a large tree, and its wood is used for furniture, utensils, musical instruments, and interior finishes.
