wood used as a raw material for basswood plywood

Shinano, the former name of Nagano Prefecture, was written as “Shinano” using the characters 科野 in ancient times. It is also said that the name came from the abundance of chinaberry trees found there. In the past, the tree’s fibers were woven into cloth and used to make clothing and other items. Even today, they are used for small home décor items. In Japan, “shina plywood” is particularly well known as a somewhat expensive plywood with an attractive surface. The wood is used for plywood, disposable chopsticks, matchsticks, and ice cream sticks, among other things.
