A rare variety of cherry tree with deep, rich coloring
A rare species of cherry tree, its name derives from the Ainu word *shiuri*, meaning “bitter tree.” Its fine, beautiful grain and stable quality make it a prized timber. The wood sometimes displays unusual shades of green to purple throughout, and its deep reddish hue gives it a distinctly Japanese character, setting it apart from cherry. It is used for furniture and rulers.
