Tsuga, grown on Yakushima, a World Heritage site
Yakushima is famous for its Yakusugi cedars, but hemlock and fir also grow wild there. The term “Yakushima hemlock” refers in particular to large-diameter hemlocks. Since many Yakushima hemlocks are exceptionally old, their grain is extremely fine and dense, and they can sometimes display figured patterns such as ripple marks.
